Goals for the Future

Freshmen

I would like to see some of the Freshmen I engaged this year plan some Hillel functions next year.  I met a few students who definitely have leadership potential; they just need the courage to take on the responsibility of organizing an event.  Throughout the majority of the year, I planned an event and the students would show up.  Towards the end of the year, I was able to get a few students to help out, but I didn't have many new programs by that point.  Next year, the sophomore class has great potential to make Jewish life on campus a vibrant reality.

Greeks

I would like to see the AEPi guys become more actively involved in Jewish activities at Hillel.  Now that they have grown to roughly 45 members, there is a lot of potential for more interaction with Hillel.  I would focus on trying to get the Sophomores to plan a Greek Shabbat dinner, or a fundraiser that helps a Jewish cause.  The AEPi National Convention will be held in New Orleans the first week in August.  Hopefully this will produce a buzz of energy that can be tapped into.  I would like to see the sororities such as AEPhi and SDT plan some community service activities.  Overall, there is a lot of potential, but it is a matter of getting to know the right people.  There will be a lot of sophomores throughout all the Greek Houses that could get involved.

Drama Students

I am hopeful that a few of the students who were involved this year with the Jewish Theater Group would want to start up a group next year.  It's all a matter of which students want to take the initiative to have one.  I definitely recommend having a Murder Mystery Shabbat, because that was my personal highlight of the year.  I would also recommend having a talent show, something that never ended up happening this year.  There definitely is potential to have a successful Theater group that is separate from Tulane's Theater Department.

Leadership

After I have gotten to know a student through a series of interactions, I begin to evaluate whether or not she would make a good leader.  Leadership is important, because it's the potential leaders who can help make a program successful.  Evaluating people isn't the easiest task especially since everyone has their strengths and weaknesses.  I would make an excellent golf coach, but I would have a much harder time leading a Rosh Chodesh group.  At the same time, its pretty easy to figure out that some students want to lead while others prefer to take a passive role in activities.  Most students fall somewhere in between, and that is why it is important to understand the students main interests.  Coffee hours, smoothie hours, and lunchtime are the best opportunities to get to know the students.
