The Jewish Campus Service Corps Fellow(JCSC Alex Fox) has the primary job of doing engagement programming on the Tulane campus. This means that the JCSC is supposed to work with students who have previously been uninvolved with Jewish life on campus. The JCSC should spend most of his time on campus, and away from the building. The JCSC is famous for giving out Free food all over campus.
The Jewish Student Life Coordinator(JSLC) is responsible for working with the empowerment students and advising the Hillel Student Board. This year the New Orleans Hillel has had two people at the position. Lynn Brooks started off the year, but had to leave in November. Our fabulous development director Kathryn Saffro decided she want to spend time with students, and she took over the job. The JSLC in New Orleans is also responsible for engagement programming, and the job in many ways overlaps with the JCSC. This has been a big transitional year. Next year, Kathryn will be the supervisor for the JCSC.
The Development Director is in charge of financial matters at Hillel. She is in charge of fundraising, and without money, we wouldn't be able to give out so much Free food to students. Kathryn Saffro was the Director until December.
This year a student Rachel Friedmann has become the Development and Marketing Fellow. She was greatly involved in planning and fundraising for Hillel's big Spring fundraiser where Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary sung Puff the Magic Dragon to an audience of students and community members. She received her BA in May, and she will be getting her Masters next year at Tulane.
The Executive Director, Paige Nathan is the person who has the final word on the programs and the funding that takes place. She has the most contact with the Hillel lay board, and various other Jewish organizations as well as community members. This year, she was my supervisor. She has two rambunctious little boys who love to wreak havoc with the JCSC.
The Director of Operations, Shira Geller is the person responsible for making sure that the office logistics run smoothly. She's in charge of answering the phone, purchasing food and office supplies, and making sure the rest of the staff stays organized. Shes a cool 22 year old from Illinois, and someday in the future, she will be running her own organization.
STRUCTURE
This year, Paige Nathan served as my supervisor, or as Hillel International suggests, Coach. Paige and I had a set time to meet once a week to go over my plans for engaging the students. We would also talk at various times throughout the week to discuss what was happening. I also spent a lot of time asking questions to Shira, Kathryn, and Rachel. We also had weekly staff meetings where we would officially find out the happenings of the office. Next year, Kathryn the JSLC will act as Coach to the JCSC. She is easy to talk to, and the programming should be a lot of fun. Overall, the office is laid back, although there are stressful times especially during the High Holidays. As a future JCSC, just make sure you have a clear idea on the best ways to spend your time!
