What is Jewish Learning?
National Hillel and the Center for Jewish Engagement requires that every JCSC participate in Jewish learning on a weekly base. The idea is that one hour every week the JCSC should expand his Jewish knowledge. It's an opportunity to study Torah, learn about Israel, meet with a Rabbi or take Hebrew classes. I wish my Jewish learning hour throughout the year was more productive.
For the first few weeks, I met with some of the local Rabbis and a reform cantor, and I discussed the possibilities of working in the Rabbinate. It was great to get different perspectives on becoming a Rabbi, and I realized a few months later that it wouldn't be for me. The problem with my Jewish learning is that it wasn't consistent. I definitely spent about an hour a week expanding my Jewish knowledge, but it was a lot of personal reading time as opposed to a structured setting.
During the second semester, I frequently met with Rabbi Shiff of Beth Israel when he would come to Tulane for our Rap with the Rabbi program. I enjoyed our times to talk about Jewish issues, but it only lasted for about half the semester. I wish I had done more, but I know that I have a lifetime ahead of me to enhance my Jewish knowledge.
I recommend that you have structured weekly learning sessions where you know what you will be learning. The problem I had was the inconsistency throughout the whole year. There are a lot of options, and you will have many resources to choose from. Take advantage of the opportunity, and study a new aspect of Judaism. Most importantly, have a lot of fun with it, and make it your time to do what you want!
